What one lot actually costs
The margin is what leaves your account. The contract value is what is actually moving. They are not the same number, and the gap is the point.

How this works
One lot is the lot size times the price. Since November 2024 a new index contract has to be worth at least 15 lakh, so this number is larger than many people still picture.
The margin is a fraction of that. The ratio between them is how much is moving for every rupee you put up, and it works the same in both directions.
The share of your capital is there because a margin that looks affordable on its own can still be most of what you have.

What this does not say: This is arithmetic on figures you typed. It is not a view on any contract, and it does not say what share of your capital belongs in one.
